From the Taoists of early China to the works of Carlos Casteneda - who named it Stopping the World’ - mystic texts from ancient times and into the modern world have talked about a certain kind of all-seeing gaze. In this 2-day exploration, we will explore the ‘witness position’ of consciousness by day and the hill country of central Texas by night.
NightWalking, as developed by Nelson Zink and Steve Parks of the Embudo Center, Embudo, New Mexico, is a perceptual strategy designed to enhance intuition and creativity. By learning these specific strategies and tools, you will discover ‘peripheral awareness’, your own inherent, natural ability.
NightWalking can stop your internal dialogue and amplify your intuitive abilities. You will develop a deeper understanding of yourself and your relationship with the world around you. You will experience connection to your own consciousness and to the Earth, stepping into the realm of perception beyond the five senses. Through liberating your energy and attention, you will begin to move with effortless grace as you master NightWalking.

Tibetan spiritual walkers, called lung-gom-pa, neither speak nor look from side to side, keeping their eyes fixed on a single distant object, never being attracted/distracted by anything else. When the trance is begun, conscious awareness is sufficient to keep the walker alert to any obstacles, mindful of the direction and goal. Some say the feet of the lung-gom-pa touch the ground no longer, gliding along with a serene and graceful fleetness.
Bill Bradley, former New York Knicks basketball player, discovered "…practicing peripheral vision . . . led me to the discovery that I could look one way on the basketball court and see things other players couldn't. That made it easier for me to pass or move. This way of seeing the game naturally led to the idea of its being a sort of radar in your life or your profession, constantly scanning all the possible implications for any particular action. My eyes have become a metaphor for a frame of mind."

In The Book of Five Rings, Miyamoto Musashi, the legendary swordsman of 16th century Japan, discusses how to develop and use a strange ability connected with the two types of sight - Ken and Kan. The first type of sight, Ken, registers the movements of surface phenomena; observing superficial appearance. Kan is the examination of the essence of things, seeing through, into or beyond. Ken is seeing with the eyes, Kan - seeing with the soul.

"Almost immediately NightWalking became one of the most consistently
relaxing and exhilarating experiences we had ever had. The reports,
ancient and modern, were true -- employing peripheral vision and
"second sight" facilitates a distinct change in perception while promoting
a serene sense of well-being."
- Nelson Zink, From NavaChing, site for Your Delight

About the Experience: Our 'classroom' for this workshop will be the Buescher State Park,  near Austin. This is an outdoor experience in intimate connection with the 'salk'a' or undomesticated energy of nature. There will be some easy walking over even terrain, both by day and by night. We will be outside most of the day, with plenty of shade and access to indoor restrooms. Please dress appropriately, with comfortable walking shoes. Remember your sunglasses, sunscreen and water bottle. Also you will need a sturdy, billed hat and a small flashlight for the NightWalking adventures. Bring something to sit on -- a portable chair, mat or blanket. We will be within easy access of 'domesticated' facilities for our meal break. Although area restaurants will be close enough, we highly recommend that you bring your own.
Full details, directions and a map will be provided upon registration.
